  1. What advantages do AppleBoost products have over fresh apples?
The health benefits of apples have long been appreciated, and eating whole fruits and vegetables is always a smart thing to do. A diet filled with these fiber-rich foods is linked to lower risk of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer, and more.  Fruits and veggies help combat inflammation, and are a natural way to ensure healthy aging. That's why experts recommend between five and ten servings of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables daily. But because most of us fall short of that goal at times, products like AppleBoost capsules and applesauce can help.  All our products, which contain dried apple peel powder, help you to get concentrated apple nutrients easily. Apple peel contains two to six times more nutrients than the flesh of the apple.  When dried and powdered, the nutrients are more concentrated than in fresh peel, and research suggests they are more easily absorbed by your body as well.

  2. With its added apple peel antioxidants, is AppleBoost applesauce suitable for children? Or is it just for adults?
It's a great healthy food for everyone, including children! The additional antioxidants in AppleBoost's entire product line come from dried apple peel powder (DAPP), which is simply a food.  In addition, DAPP has been granted GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status by the FDA.  Children today often don't get enough of the right nutrients, and AppleBoost applesauce is a great way to help them do so.  For the grownups, AppleBoost is a terrific way to get in the antioxidants that health experts believe are so important for healthy aging.

  3. Is it safe for athletes to supplement with AppleBoost capsules?
Yes. The dried apple peel powder found in AppleBoost capsules is the same DAPP we add to our applesauce.  It's not an isolate, drug, or additive; it's simply dried and powdered organic apple peel. Our patented process retains all the nutrient-rich properties of fresh peel. DAPP has been certified "free of banned substances" by NSF International, one of the top dietary supplement certification programs worldwide.

  4. What is NSF certification?
NSF is widely recognized as the only not-for-profit independent testing organization for dietary supplements.  Enrollment in NSF's certification program is voluntary, and the companies that enroll choose to do so primarily to offer their customers an added measure of safety and assurance.  Products are tested in NSF's accredited laboratories to ensure that what is in the supplement is accurately reflected on the label, and to make sure that there are no unacceptable levels of contaminants in the supplement. Supplements are retested regularly to ensure continued compliance with NSF's high standards. Supplements that meet these high standards are proud to display the NSF logo.

  5. Why is NSF certification important?
While supplement manufacturers are required to comply with regulations governing the industry, problems and errors still do occur from time to time.  Tainted ingredients from China in recent years is one example.  Consumers who choose supplements with the NSF logo can be confident that what they see on the label is exactly what they'll get. AppleBoost™ DAPP capsules are enrolled in the NSF Certified for Sport™ program, which reduces the risk that a supplement contains substances that are banned by major sports associations.

  6. How many DAPP capsules should I take per day?
We recommend three to nine DAPP capsules a day – the equivalent of peels from one to three medium apples.  DAPP is a convenient way to add healthy, whole-food nutrients to your diet, but it is not a substitute for fresh whole fruits and vegetables. We encourage you to eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily.

  7. What is ORAC, and how does it relate to AppleBoost Products?
ORAC is an acronym for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.  It's a way to measure how a particular substance absorbs the damaging free radicals, or oxidants, that are associated with aging and disease. The higher the ORAC value, the more protection from oxidation it gives you. Fresh Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples, for instance, score very high on the ORAC scale, but gram for gram, dried apple peel powder (DAPP) scores ten times higher.

  8. Doesn't processing the apple peels diminish the nutrients in it?

On the contrary!  Researcher Rui Hai Liu, Ph.D, and his team at Cornell University found a way to dry and mill apple peels while keeping all the natural nutrients intact.  Dr. Liu went on to patent this process.  The nutrients in dried apple peel are so powerful that Dr. Liu wrote his patent application for dried apple peel powder with cancer treatment in mind.  Careful laboratory testing and analysis confirm that gram for gram, the nutrients in dried apple peel are even more concentrated than in fresh peel.

  9. If apple peels are so healthy, why aren’t they blended back into other brands of applesauce?
Most apple products today are developed with popular consumer preferences in mind: smooth texture and sweet flavor. The dense, fibrous texture of apple peel does not appeal to most people. Dried apple peel powder, on the other hand, is virtually undetectable in the finished product.  Leahy Orchards is the only applesauce company currently licensed to use DAPP in its applesauce.
